I just started Magic City and ugh. Jeffery Dean Morgan in white tuxedos, mobsters, and a cast of characters who are mostly Jewish. You often hear people of color and the LGBTQ community talk about not seeing themselves on TV and I feel that way about a lack of Jewish characters on my screen but not with Magic City. Yes it's a premium channel show about a hotel and mobsters so its horrible people doing horrible things but still. Representation, for once *I* can have it.

So, guess what? The Conservative movement of Judaism - of which I am a member - has offically and sanctioned gay marriage. Now that's not them saying "Hey, if you want to be gay and be partnered that's okay by us." The council of Torah law scholar rabbis and lawyers came up with a set of prayers and blessings so that they can be sanctified RELIGIOUSLY just like a straight marriage. They're specific to male/male and female/female couples (because Hebrew is a highly gendered language) and offered a supplemental ring exchange for the very specificity of the groom giving the bride a ring. This is huge yall. This is going beyond the legal to the spiritual and I am so pleased with my organized religion right now.

I am also completely and utterly amused because at the same time that they released sanctions and guidelines on Jewish gay marriage? They also released sanctions and guidelines on Jewish gay divorce. Because of all religions on earth, my religion is like "CONGRATS! MUCH HAPPINESS TO YOU! But just in case..."

Anyway, thats not my good news but it's still good news. I thought I would share.

There's some stuff going on - a lot of them good! YAY! Even the stuff that isnt so good is coupled with some good stuff. So, I'm going to talk about it all.

~So, tonight is the first night of Passover. YAY! Passover for me is like Christmas is for some Christians. It is my all time favorite holiday. For those of you have been on my Flist for years? You know that I go off the chain on this holiday. GUESTS! DINNERS! SINGING! PICTURES! Expect recaps, although this year will be much smaller, some of my friends from Skyland are coming on the 2nd night! Maybe [livejournal.com profile] ofangoriousone will come? Idk. But yay! Passover. That said, I'm avoiding going home because the prep is giving me anxiety. Thats the mental illness, which sucks. Still, I'll take that anxiety to enjoy my holiday. YAY!

~My mom went out of town over the week. She was gone until last night and the first three days she was gone? It was not great. But I spent a lot of time painting (I've started painting guys. It's kinda great. Acrylic paints=my new favorite thing) and that was both artistically satisfying and really helpful for my anxiety.

~I'm working more hours so if the car clusterfuck with the fines doesnt get resolved, I'll still get to get through it a little bit quicker than I thought. So that's something thank god.

~ Does anyone else watch South Park? Because WHAT THE FUCK! No seriously, what the actual fuck. )

~Lastly, yall, we need to have a talk about Spartacus: Vengeance. Did anyone else watch it? Because another thing I did this week was mainline it like it was heroin. Holy crap. I miss Andy Whitfield God rest him but this season? By far my favorite. It was like...okay. At some point, this show realized that Blood and Sand(s1) and Gods of the Arena(S2 and the prequel) were kinda rapey and that was not good. That didnt go away this season, probably never will, but this season was like "Hey, lets write a whole bunch of women who kick ass in various ways and give/take their own agency in whatever way works best for them." It was magnificent. I have no idea what happened in the writers room, because the show is still problematic in a LOT of ways but it went from an 8 on the feminism problematic scale to more like a 3 because it looked at its women and said "Hey, lets give them agency or deal with their PTSD/trauma/problems in ways that are respectful and the sort of choices that real women would make." Ugh, you guys it was glorious. Not only that? IT PASSED THE FREAKING BECHDEL TEST MOST EPS. WHAT EVEN.

Lets not even talk about Lucy Lawless: The Flawless. She was amazing the end. All the Romans were creeptastic awesome.

And then? There was the gay love story. *HANDS* You guys. There is exactly one "they meet and then they fall in love" love story this season and its between one of Spartacus' lieutenant's Agron and one of the freed male slaves Nasir. It's slow build. It begins in a friendship. It's romantic. It's done in a way that isnt self-congradulatory or blatant. Everyone in their sphere are just like "oh, hey, these two guys, who are our friends, are falling in love. That's nice." It's just a part of the universe, no attention is drawn to it except within the building of their relationship. It just is. Just like Naevia and Crixus just are. Just like every other heterosexual relationship just is. Ultraviolent, ultragraphic trashy show: doing gay love right. Oh, and did I mention how they are super hot for each other? They are. *points at icon* They are super hot, in general and for each other and occasionally they make out against walls. So yeah. If you're bored, check it out. I'm falling down the kink meme hole. Expect trashy, roman-flavored porn in this space in the future *facepalm*

~I still have to finish the Hunger Games/Bandom fusion to work on and there is a LOT of it. No, a lot. I'm at 27K and just got them down to the gym for day 1 of training(if you know the book, you know exactly where that is). So yeah, I do not need a new ship right now, especially not one with canon boykissing to fuel the fire of obsession. PLEASE SEND HELP! HELP!!

Day 5 - In your own space, share something non-fannish you are passionate about with your fannish friends.

I dont have much actually. *frowns* My life is pretty fandom-focused in terms of passions. But I managed to think of 1.

Passover. Every Passover, my holiday rolls around and life gets more interesting and intense for about two days because there's the Seder. I've taken an active part in putting it together and/or done it myself and led the service myself every year since 2006. I have people over. I cook. I organize. I managed to pull it off in dorm kitchens and in foreign countries and its something I'm unbelievably proud of and passionate about. I love my faith, I love my culture, and I never feel more Jewish than putting together or participating in the Seder.

ALL THE THINGS!!!

♥So, the new LJ format sucks I hear? [livejournal.com profile] guest_age made me a layout like...a year ago and so I dont actually see any of the changes? I hear if you go to ?=light it goes back to almost-normal. Not a fix but temporary solution for you guys who are dealing with it atm?

♥HANNUKAH IS HERE! Argh, consumerist holiday is consumerist but that said - omg you guys. THE PRESENTS. I DONT KNOW HOW TO DEAL! I'M SWIMMING IN GRATITUDE! THINGS CAME IN THE MAIL! THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL AND I WANT TO CRY!
Thank yous, in order of arrival by mail:
-[livejournal.com profile] jankato thank you so so so SO much for the Venture Bros DVDs. You didnt have to do that. You did it anyway. I cant deal with how wonderful that gesture was and just thinking about your generousity makes me tear up. Here is a picture of me with your present under the cut )
-[livejournal.com profile] trcunning thank you for the little bag. IT HAS BOB BRYAR ON ONE SIDE AND RYAN ROSS ON THE OTHER! Guys, you need to click and see this. She painted them. Bob is so BOBLIKE and Ryan is in FULL PRISONVERSE MAKE UP! It's beautiful. IDK what I'm going to use it for but I cant stand how gorgeous it is. My pass out from loving it so hard. Fair warning. [livejournal.com profile] trcunning clearly put a lot of work into it.">Click here to see it - which you should because its awesome and [livejournal.com profile] trcunning clearly put a lot of work into it.

-[livejournal.com profile] isweedan is making my Hanukkah dreams come true via podfic. If you havent heard how awesome her podficcing is? Go to her journal and listen to some of it. Her voice is awesome and sometimes you can hear her smiling through her voice and it is THE MOST CHARMING THING ON PLANET EARTH! Plus, she's quite good at characters. So just - go now. You wont regret it.
-[livejournal.com profile] guest_age got me Scott Pilgrim vs The World because its the best comic movie ever made. I'm sorry Batman/Xmen/Avengers people. All of those are awesome, but they're not as quirky and perfect as Scott Pilgrim - which even has Captain America IN IT! Magical!

♥My little sister Hillary is in town. This is stressful as hell but also good? I love her a lot but dear god she makes me so tired and wears me out because she is a difficult human being. She is funny and fascinating but difficult. Wouldn't be the holidays without that would it? However she did get me THE CUTEST LAPTOP BAG IN ALL OF THE LAND THAT HAS A NEON PINK KITTY ON IT and a sparkly Hello Kitty case for my droid with the British flag on it. Both items are SUPER CUTE and you can see them here. ) Yeah. My sister won at Hannukah in my family this year. Lol.

♥Speaking of Hannukah - Conan O'Brien is trying destroy your soul through the most perverse Menorah OF ALL TIME. Click here. Your morbid curiosity wants you to.

♥The new hospital is...interesting? They're all about whole body health and I think I'm covertly terrified of truly healing. Dont tell my mom? /o\

♥Graduation! Turns out, my paperwork never made it to FSU so technically I havent graduated yet - even though I walked in August. So, my superwoman-levels-of-awesome ally in the Dean of Undergraduate Students office pulled some strings and moved some papers and now the Official Paperwork has me graduating university in January of 2012. Do you know what this means? It means that when I apply for jobs, I dont have to account for why there's a massive gap in my work from October to Whenever I finish my psychiatric treatment. I wasnt working because I hadnt graduated yet! BEST! HANNUKAH PRESENT! OF ALL!

So. Um, how are yall?

So, I went Passover shopping in Golders Green today after therapy. *flops* Omg, exhausting. Good exhausting, omnom matzoh ball soup mix and kosher meat and kiddush wine.

I AM HAVING SEDERS! There will be one Sunday evening and one Monday evening. Last years was EPIC and I dont know if I can live up to it. However, it is pretty much guaranteed to be awesome because its passover.

THIS IS AN OPEN INVITATION TO LONDON PEOPLE ON MY FLIST! PLEASE COME TO MY SEDER! I WANT YOU THERE.

There's a very important line in the Seder that says "Let all who are hungry come and eat." Well, to my beloved London people, Jews, Christians, Muslims, atheists, and believers in other faiths I am too tired to list - you are welcome. Please join me. I'm cooking up a storm and I want to feed you. I want you to make the my favorite holiday even more special by being my guest. Drop me a comment ASAP if you can come Sunday or Monday or both (time is negotiable once I know what people's schedules look like) so I can PM you information. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY PASSOVER!

Also - I got movement on my BBB \o/ So I get to do this!

Yesterday my phone went missing. After much searching - in my car, in my room, in the SDCR, and FINALLY at the Borders where I remembered using it (despite the fact that the Borders people were like "uh, no?") found it. It was in the couch cushion at Borders. This of course is AFTER I tapped the fender of the car next to me trying to park and locked my keys and wallet in my car on my way to breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] b_dsaint. *exhales* Oh yeah you guys. It's going to be one of those days and I am working what is notoriously the WORST dorm on campus tonight. Joy.

On the plus side, I am almost done you guys. I have 2 shifts left, one exam, sorting out my prescriptions (my insurance company is being assholish) and the packing. That is not bad at all. Also, I have about 1800 words of my yuletide. It kind of exploded out of me. I dont know that its what my person wanted it but it's clearly what my muse was hankering for.

And tonight is the last night of Hannukah. I have barely observed it at all this year. Hopefully I can get enough done to see my sister tonight. It's been good though, over all. Hardly the most memorable but I got a whole lot done.

HAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanukah you guys. It's Hannukah. I freaking love this holiday. It's not my favorite (see Passover '09) but its definitely up there. I spent the first day of Hannukah after class with my little sister Hillary. She made me a mug with my name on it!

Since we cant use fire in the dorm, I've been marking the games like so:

And because in the US it is a gift giving holiday, I'm going to throw up the wishlist meme!

STEP ONE - Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you. [Note: Your home address is not required!]

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

STEP TWO
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no guarantees with this project, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

I celebrated the first night of Hannukah by having WAY too much fried food. The diner doesnt have latkes but it does have french fries. That's oil and it counts. *sigh* Oh culture, how I love you but straight to my hips.

Anywho today is the last day of non-finals class! YAY!

So, I spoke to my boss and my teachers. I'm going to Atlanta tomorrow. I'm staying for about a week because hey, I just realized that Rosh Hashana is a week from today. In order for me to actually go to temple, I *have* to be in Atlanta. Otherwise I will hide in my apartment and just not go out. So yeah. Decision made. I'm leaving after therapy tomorrow. It feels like the right thing to do.

So yeah. Decision made - I feel a lot better. I'm really sick of being crazy though. It's flipping exhausting.

No, really, its kind of repulsive how far into the writing pool I fell in the last 48 hours. *points at her new icon* This was my life, minus sleeping, for the last two days. Passover eating is not conducive to this kind of productivity. I want toast and ice cream and salad with dressing and pasta and did I mention toast? And DAMN YOU RELIGIOUS CONVICTION! WHY MUST YOU BE SO SPIRITUALLY SATSIFYING?!

I wrote myself into a place where I got up and took a walk. If you know me in person, you might have personally experienced how hard it is to get me to do anything resembling exercise. And yet there I went. I got a metric fuckton accomplished. 6,000+ words done on my BBB and a ficlet for Miz, which I'm going to post in a little bit. I feel like I've been hit by a truck.

How's everyone else holding up under the BBB pressure?
